My Words His Mouth

plato_cm

How dare you take my words
My notions and ideas
that I was willing to share
to surmise something that was… uniquely me

How dare you take my words
maim them, debase them
of their weight, their specific ornamentation
and claim them for your own.

You could look all the more brilliant
to credit me, to say you agree with my phrases
as there is strength in numbers.

But you stripped my words
called them Plato’s, called on the ultimate authority
of a dead man.

But a dead man cannot support you
or contest you when you put words
in his mouth
and take them out of mine.
